UPS Systems: The Different Types Available

UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) systems are designed to safeguard electronic devices and equipment from power disruptions. They come in various types, each offering specific features and benefits.

1. Offline/Standby UPS

The Offline/Standby UPS is commonly used for less critical applications. This type of UPS remains idle during normal power conditions and switches to battery power only when the main power supply fails. It provides a basic level of power protection, ensuring continuity for essential devices during outages.

2. Line-interactive UPS

The Line-interactive UPS goes beyond the capabilities of Offline/Standby UPS systems. It features additional voltage regulation capabilities, allowing it to handle minor power fluctuations. This type of UPS adjusts the voltage output to stabilise the incoming power, protecting connected devices from voltage surges or drops. During power outages, it seamlessly switches to battery power, providing backup to connected devices until normal power is restored.

3. Online/Double Conversion UPS

The Online/Double Conversion UPS offers the highest level of power protection and reliability. It employs a continuous double conversion process, where incoming AC power is converted to DC power and then back to AC power. This ensures a clean, stable power supply without any interruption, irrespective of the quality or stability of the utility power. The battery in an Online/Double Conversion UPS is continuously powering the load, providing immediate backup during outages and protecting sensitive equipment from power disturbances.
